Introduction

The Details

Looking back to move forward is the result of my capstone project for my Bachelor of Creative Arts degree at Yorkville University. It combines my educational background in Fashion Design with my love of history and art. Modern society can learn from many different sections of human skills by looking at the times before ours reaching back until known history. The concept behind this project is to take 10 periods from history and look at the fashions of the time. Delving into the fabrics, embellishments, dyes, and styles to see the society, environment, and cultures that impacted these garments. Then using this information, I created miniature versions of the selected garments which are now showcased in a virtual exhibit. The final step was using these recreations as inspiration I designed modern garments inspired by their historical counterparts.

The challenges in selecting time periods came with the availability of evidence of the garments. With ancient clothing being made of organic materials it is difficult to find archeological support of this information. Most of what can be found for ancient cultures are in the form of sculptures or other images which leave much to the imagination and debate. The selection of these periods represents some of the earliest civilizations that we have evidence of spanning as much of a global presence as possible while keeping to the earliest cultures in each region. The areas of the global that are not represented do not currently have archeological support for garment which fit into the current timeline which I was following. The plan for the future of this project includes expanding the timeline and global footprint as there is much to explore.
