Ancient Egypt

3150 to 30 BCE

While Ancient Egypt has been portrayed in many movies, books, plays, and art since the rediscovery of the pyramids there is still much we can learn about the clothing they wore. As this area is one of hot weather the garments found in Ancient Egypt are made from light fabric including linen. They were often minimal in nature. For men the common clothing was a wrapped and pleated kilt which was secured with a belt.1 These items would protect the males lower half while leaving their upper chest exposed. They could be secured with either fabric or beaded belts.2

Women’s clothing also had a base of linen wrapped around the torso and left to drape to different lengths based on their social status.1 For decoration they could be covered with a net bead dress.3 This would provide colour and embellishment to the outfit.
